In 2023, SHOFCO celebrated 20 years of transformative impact, reaching over 2.4 million people across Kenya. With programs spanning health, education, water and sanitation (WASH), gender inclusion, libraries, and financial empowerment, SHOFCO continues to empower communities in informal settlements.
Key Achievements:
- Health: Over 183,000 individuals reached through health outreach, with 0% mother-to-child HIV transmission in SHOFCO clinics compared to the 15% national rate.
- Education: SHOFCO’s Girls Leadership Academies provided free, high-quality education to 613 girls, achieving a 100% high school matriculation rate.
- WASH: Delivered 23 million liters of clean water to over 37,000 daily users through its innovative aerial piping system.
- Gender & Inclusion: Addressed 10,229 gender-based violence (GBV) cases and trained 4,497 youth mental health ambassadors.
- Libraries: 17 community libraries served 257,339 users and mentored over 17,000 teens.
- Financial Empowerment: The SHOFCO SACCO mobilized $1.75 million in savings and distributed $2.15 million in loans to members.
Expanding the Vision:
In 2023, the SHOFCO Urban Network (SUN) grew to encompass 1.5 million members, uniting communities to advocate for systemic change. SHOFCO also launched initiatives like Youth Voice and Empowerment, aiming to create opportunities for two million young Kenyans through financial literacy, job placement, and entrepreneurship programs.
