Peace is more than a word—it is a fragile but vital foundation that holds communities together through action, intention, and a commitment to unity. In Kenya, political instability and deeply rooted historical divisions have repeatedly led to violent outbreaks around election cycles. The aftermath of the 2007 post-election violence saw over 1,500 people killed, 3,000 women subjected to sexual violence, and more than 300,000 individuals displaced. Similar unrest occurred after the 2017 elections, with at least 12 deaths and over 100 injured due to excessive police force during demonstrations. As Kenya prepared for its 2022 elections, concerns of violence resurfaced, fueled by factors such as ethnic rivalries, politically motivated hate speech, and competition over scarce resources exacerbated by climate change.

The stakes are high: when peace is disrupted, the nation experiences widespread destabilization. Young people, in particular, often express their frustrations through protests and unrest, as seen in the recent demonstrations against the 2024 Finance Bill. These events reflect a deeper systemic problem—inequities and exclusion that leave many voices unheard.

The Solution

Through SHOFCO and the SHOFCO Urban Network (SUN), we are working to unite communities around the shared vision of “one Kenya.” By bringing together community and religious leaders, organizing peaceful demonstrations, and fostering democratic advocacy, we reduce tribal tensions and encourage coexistence.

Peace is not passive; it requires action. SUN’s peacekeeping efforts show what is possible when communities are organized and empowered. By equipping members with tools for peaceful advocacy, fostering dialogue among different groups, and creating safe spaces for youth, we transform frustration into collaboration.

In 2017, SUN mobilized 5,000 people for a peace rally to unite communities and end violent election protests that disrupted livelihoods. By 2022, SUN members were instrumental in Kenya’s most peaceful election in history, mobilizing more than 750,00 people.

SUN members achieve what international organizations cannot because they understand the local challenges and know what their communities need. They advocate for fair processes, championing development and democracy as they create pathways for peace and progress.

Today, we continue to advocate for local solutions led by those closest to the challenges. By working with youth, community leaders, and partners, we ensure that peace is not just maintained, but strengthened for future generations.

Our peacekeeping efforts were a major contributing factor to Kenya's most peaceful election in history.
