Impact

Our communities’ libraries have significantly improved access to educational resources in informal settlements, helping to foster a culture of learning and literacy.

By creating safe, inclusive spaces for community members to engage in reading and learning, we have empowered individuals to pursue education and personal growth.

Our libraries serve as vital hubs for knowledge, offering tools for both academic and personal development, and contributing to long-term educational equity in the communities we serve.

Situation

Access to information and resources is a challenge for many communities, particularly in informal settlements where the cost of books, magazines, newspapers, and other materials can be a significant financial burden. Additionally, low literacy rates and limited access to education are common issues.

Strategies

From its modest beginnings in 2011, when the first library was opened alongside a community center in Kibera, the SHOFCO Libraries program has grown tremendously in size and influence. Today, we focus on three key strategies:

  1. We establish community libraries with a wide range of resources, including books, digital tools, and study spaces. These libraries provide a safe and quiet environment for learning, where individuals can gather to study and read.
  2. A selection of our community libraries provide computers, tablets and WiFi, enabling communities, particularly young people to access information.
  3. Our community libraries provide a space for community and local school events, and workshops, including reading and debate groups.
  4. We host community learning, including our environmental clubs, where students learn about climate change, sustainable practices, and urban farming.

Outcomes

  • Access to educational resources is expanded, promoting literacy and lifelong learning in underserved communities.
  • Safe, inclusive spaces are created for residents to learn, connect, and grow.
  • Community cohesion is strengthened through shared access to information and participation in educational and cultural activities.
  • Local schools and educational initiatives benefit from enhanced resources and opportunities for students to succeed.
